디지탈 도서관은 초고속 정보 통신망 상에서의 가장 중요한 응용 중의 하나라고 할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 지능형 디지탈 도서관의 구축에 필요한 요소 기술을 개발하고 이러한 기술들을 통합하여 초고속 정보 통신망 환경에서 운용될 수 있는 시스템을 개발하는 데 목적을 둔 연구 개발의 결과를 MIRAGE라는 시스템을 통해 기술한다. 장기적인 목표를 가지고 시작된 MIRAGE의 기능과 범위는 계속적으로 확장되고 있으나, 현재는 이러한 장기적인 목표를 달성하는데 필수적인 다음과 같은 기본 기능이 MIRAGE 시스템에 구현되어 있다. 즉, 1) 사용자로 하여금 검색(retrieval)과 브라우징을 혼합하여 필요한 멀티미디어 정보를 획득할 수 있도록 하는 사용자 인터페이스, 2) 한글 및 영어 텍스트 데이타를 자동적으로 색인하고 사용자 질의에 적합한 문서를 검색하는 검색 엔진, 3) 클라이언트/서버 환경에서 검색을 지원하는 Z39.50 프로토콜, 4) 객체관계형 DBMS와 정보검색엔진과의 통합을 통한 멀티미디어 데이타의 검색과 저장 및 관리 등의 기능 등을 들 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 이들을 중심으로 MIRAGE시스템과 그 구성요소를 기술한다.

(English Abstract) |
Constructing digital libraries is considered as one of the most important applications on the Information Super Highway. The project described herein has the goal of developing the core technologies for an intelligent digital library and constructing an integrated system that works in the high-speed network environment. While the project will continue with new ideas and techniques to be added on, the focus of the first year has been on integrating basic technologies to set the stage for further development. They include: 1) the technique for building a user interface that allows users to retrieve and browse through multimedia information, 2) the information retrieval technique that includes indexing and retrieving texts in both Korean and English; 3) the client/server model using the Z39.50 protocol; 4) the integration of an information retrieval system and an object-relational DBMS that is capable of dealing with multimedia data. We describe the prototype we implemented using the techniques.
